Area Attractions

The area is loaded with fun destinations.
Some of our favorites over the years have been:

Water Sports

National Lakeshore Park

  • Hiking - lots of hiking trails of various lengths and rigor
  • Biking the Sleeping Bear Trail between the Big Dune and Glen Arbor
  • Pierce Stocking Trail is a drive thru the park to many Lake MI overlooks
  • Park headquarters is in Empire: great displays, maps and a Park slide show
  • The great Dune Climb – it’s worth the effort!
  • Pyramid Point is another favorite farther up M22

Golf - for the golfers in the crowd, there’s lots of excellent courses to choose from.

Interlochen music camp and summer concerts

Great small towns to explore in the area:

  • Frankfort – The Point Betsie Lighthouse, Benzie County's most famous landmark, is located on the Lake Michigan shore of the county just south of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and just north of Frankfort, Michigan.
  • Gwen Frostic’s (local art legend)
  • Beulah on Crystal Lake – also a paved biking trail into Frankfurt
  • Empire: great swing set and teeter tauter at the Lake MI beach; North Bar lake is just outside Empire and offers a short shallow channel connecting the warm lake to the Great Lake; Park HQ’s is also here.
  • Glen Arbor on the way up to the Dune Climb
  • Farther up the Lenenaw Peninsula is Leland and Suttons Bay
  • Traverse City is a great destination spot - see below...
